THE STRANDS OF WHAT WE DO

imPOSSIBLE’s creative engine makes a significant contribution to Cornwall’s ambition to be a world leading rural creative economy.

We produce a programme of high-quality cultural experiences by developing talent, new work, and audiences through:

  • Productions: We create work to perform locally, nationally and internationally - spreading South West talent across our local landscape and across the globe. In 2023 we nurtured new work here in Cornwall through our Made in Cornwall programme. In 2024 we have launched The South West End - large scale, high profile, commercial potential productions led by Cornish & SW talent - See The Creakers and A Child of Science for more info

  • Falmouth International Arts Festival (FIAFest.org): World-class theatre, music, dance & digital. An annual showcase event in partnership with local businesses that attracts 20,000 visitors + significant local audience / employment.

  • The Island Talent Development: Delivered in partnership with South West and National Cultural sector partners we develop talent and new ideas through workshops, residencies and retreats, producing support, R&D and placements.

  • Consultancy and Producing: We regularly work with companies and individuals both in and beyond the creative sector offering creative problem solving and change consultancy, retreats, vision, mission and values workshops, event design and management, research, evaluation and fundraising.

WHY DO WE EXIST

The company was co-founded in May 2020 by experienced producers Gabby Vautier (Young Vic, Barbican, MIF, Punchdrunk) and Charlie Bunker (WildWorks, Arts Council England) who combine 20 years senior management experience in the UK performance sector. We initally formed Impossible in response to the Pandemic and its devastating impact on individuals in the creative sectors. We knew we needed to help freelancers make things possible. We are great at ideas and making them happen. We know how to develop a project from a glimmer of an idea to stage and beyond. We are massively ambitious and bold with our thinking.

After living and working in cities for 20 years, we now live somewhere extraordinary by the sea! It has opened up new possibilities - particularly when the pandemic meant it didnt really matter where you sleep! Cornwall is awesome - astounding seas, beaches and nature, excellent entrepreneurial creatives, campuses for leading creative universities Falmouth and Exeter Universities, a vibey all year round tourist scene, audiences really excited to see new and modern theatre and fabulous business and innovation often deeply rooted within sustainability and climate activism. We want to make where we live feel more connected to the rest of the world and create a producing infrastructure focused on creative and cultural export - particularly since 40 year old Cornish jewel Kneehigh Theatre closed in 2020. Sometimes our rural location can feel limiting. Behind the picture postcard scenes, there is significant deprivationand arts funding has significantly reduced making big creative ideas feel impossible - particularly for freelancers.

As excellent creative problem solvers and development agency we have a really clear strategy for supporting the creative sector UK wide and our local community to grow and flourish We are experts in developing new creative work and ideas. We create connections, trade routes and cultural export to and from the SW and support and give individuals opportunities to thrive.

In our founding 4 years we have delivered over 30 creative projects and 2 International arts festivals. For our first project as a new company, we beat 92 established organisations to win Londons Royal Docks commission to create ARRIVAL - a large scale outdoor production to launch the Lord Mayors Cultural Strategy of Newham with a cast of 500. We piloted Big Skies with10 newly appointed Theatre Artistic Directors which led to us launching our talent development programme The Island bringing together artists, producers and activists for conversation, producing support, R&D and Cornish retreats. Most of our productions have been created as a result of being part of The Island.

In 2022 we launched Falmouth International Arts Fest (Fiafest) bringing and showcasing incredible local, national and International contemporary live performance here at our festival by the sea.

2023 focused on our Made in Cornwall productions such as All That Glitters a collaboration with University of Exeter Arts & Culture surrounding the theme of Critical Minerals. In 2024 we launched The South West End - two large scale productions A Child of Science and The Creakers led by SW talent in collaboration with excellent national creatives. Partners include; Bristol Old Vic, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Southbank Centre and West End and Broadway commercial producers Smith & Brant and Gavin Kalin Productions.

In our founding 4 years we have supported the development of scripts, shows, orchestras, podcasts and creative ideas and have produced shows, events and festivals. We regularly creative problem solve and consult for companies in and out of the creative sector. We have worked with over 1000 artists & thousands of participants, reaching over100,000 audiences for our live work. We have supported training of 200 students and graduates and offered 40 placements across our programme of work.

We are not a core funded organisation (yet!) and there is just 2 of us. Hence the havoc. If you want to help us exist in the future please help by donating to our work here, chat to us about our bespoke sponsorship opportunities for a brand partnership or if you are in a position why not invest in one of our South West End Productions!

"Impossible Producing is exactly what Cornwall's needed for a very long time. Disparate, floating artists being supported, challenged & championed by two powerhouse women. It suddenly doesn't feel so precarious." Seamas Carey (Help I think I’m a Nationalist & The Reason Why Podcast)

OUR WORKING PRINCIPLES

We champion human beings - I’m Possible is in our DNA

We encourage acts for radical change

We look after people and give them time, space and support to think.

Having fun is really important to us. So is kindness, respect, a thank you and a credit where due.

We live our HAVOC values in all we do (honesty, anarchy, vision, optimism, collaboration)

We have kids and unapologetically work our days around the school run.

We are not limited by location. We live in Cornwall - and we work all over the world.
